The Night Prince series has some pretty good reviews, which is what prompted me to check it out once the paranormal romance mood struck me. It seemed to be a shorter series and it was also only $4 for kindle, which is why I bought it.I really enjoyed Once Burned. It was a vampire paranormal romance, but before anyone starts rolling their eyes, it was pretty well done. For starters, Leila/Frankie, the heroine, is kind of awesome. She was snarky, independent, and everything I expect from an urban fantasy girl and it was out of place to see a character so strong and witty in a paranormal romance. It offset the very alpha and controlling love interest in a really good way.Leila was not an unsuspecting human. She worked for a vampire in a circus. She had powers of her own. She couldn’t touch very many people without frying them because of the electrical currents in her arm. She also glimpsed pasts and futures when touching a person or an object. I liked that she had her own talents and was using them in a circus act and fending for herself. She ended up being kidnapped and accidentally linked to one of the most powerful vampires on the planet. Vlad. That Vlad. The Impaler. Aka Dracula. It turned out that he was actually pretty decent, though violent. Leila and Vlad immediately had a connection, despite Leila’s stubborn resolve to ignore it completely and date someone else.I liked the paranormal plot and the way everything was high stakes, violent, and dangerous. I didn’t think it was too over the top or that the vampire lore was overdone. I liked that Vlad was what you kind of expected, but he wasn’t too caveman alpha male or too sleek and elegant like so many vampire guys. The romance was great because I really liked both of the characters and their back stories. While I love paranormal romance, it can be a little redundant when you get alpha male characters and then weak and gasping heroines that melt into puddles whenever they are in the same room alone together, so I found Once Burned to be incredibly refreshing. Leila might have been melting a little, but she used snark to try and counteract her feelings. I loved it!I definitely recommend Once Burned if you enjoy paranormal romance and want something that has the fun of an urban fantasy with likeable characters and a compelling plot. It’s definitely worth the $4. I think that’s a steal. I would have totally paid a full $10 for it. I’m not surprised at all that the author also has an urban fantasy series because I totally got that vibe from the Night Prince series and it made me want to pick up the Night Huntress series, too.
There were many divergent opinions on this book. It is my first book by Jeaniene Frost, so I have no prior books from which to judge. I enjoyed the story, and found it to be a very enjoyable read. It is NOT a cliffhanger, despite protests to the contrary. It has a beginning (the introduction of a problem), a middle (all the things that happen around the problem), and an end (the resolution of the problem). I also did not find the female character to start big and then get "smaller" in personality. I think I might try one of the other series next, then come back to the next book in this series.I was surprised to find some clumsy phraseology and other issues here and there, since I've always considered Avon to be a very high standards publisher, but hey, all the editing has dropped in quality these days.
When you can’t touch another person and therefore can’t have relationships due to having the equivalent of a taser gun (times 10) for a right hand, the obvious solution would be to hook up with the most infamous/famous vampire of them all. Of course, in the literary world, said paranormal romance does not run smoothly with all the miscommunications and doubts of an uncertain relationship, not to mention a major bad guy who’s out for some mayhem and revenge.So it is the overall description of Jeaniene Frost’s first book on her Night Prince series, Once Burned. I’ve mentioned before my lack of experience towards the paranormal genre, mostly due to just personal tastes as opposed to an active dislike of the genre as a whole. I just haven’t found many books that fully engaged and entertained me. Considering how often I’ve seen Frost’s books being advertised and the positive reviews it has received, I had hopes for its potential. In the end, the book delivered on it and may have actually stirred my interest in continuing to read the books in the series along with other books.It helps considerably that the writing was good with the pace to match. With it being the first book, Frost managed to inform me the general basics of the paranormal world in which Leila and Vlad live in. One of the interesting aspects of reading books involving the paranormal, specifically vampires, is the various takes/retellings of said beings, discovering what makes them unique in the author’s world, such as how you are better off with a silver stake, sword, pole or any other sharp, pointy ended stick instead of the plain old (but more easily obtainable) wooden stake. While there are the familiar aspects (e.g. the speed, strength), it was intriguing to include the ability to hypnotize/mind swipe which heralds back to one of the oldest legendary abilities a vampire can have (can’t help having Bela Legosi looming over me in black and white in my mind). Although I’m still unsure whether these vampires are sun-repellent since there were certain scenes that, from recollection, had them out during the day. Regardless, in the end, you get a good sense of the kind of vamps you are dealing with in this world and that Vlad (as he is quick to point: the real deal and not the Bram Stoker creation thank-you-very-much) is essentially the top badass of the them all.As for Leila, she encompasses what I appreciate about beings like her: the combination of the strength and the weakness of having abilities such as hers. If she didn’t have issues with her powers that she had to work around or force her to abandon other parts of her life (i.e. lack of relationships and sex life), she would essentially be a boring character. As it is, all the hang-ups and doubts in relation to her abilities gives depth to her character and provides room for her to grow up both as a person and in her abilities. It also gives her a personality that can clash against someone like Vlad who’s learned to be in control and be confident (or arrogant if you ask Leila). And as a side note, I appreciate having a paranormal romance in which the romance didn’t drown in angst or dragged out longing to the point that it inevitably doesn’t matter to me. While I would’ve liked some more sexy-fun time since Frost indulged in the fantasy pairing of sex and biting/drinking blood, it wouldn’t have made sense considering the setting, the story and the characters themselves.As you can tell from this review, I actually enjoyed Once Burned. It was a book that was easy to get into the way one can in a summer explosion-action extravaganza blockbuster movie. It was a good mix of action, fighting, supernatural, drama, and romance in which you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. The book had the feel of it being an actual paranormal action story with some romance instead of surrounding a romance with paranormal elements. Thankfully, the ending isn’t a complete cliffhanger. It’s built so that if you choose to not read the other books, the ending has a certain finale-feeling while also indicating that Vlad’s and Leila’s story is far from done. And as of right now, I’m thinking I can go for a second (and possibly more) helping of this series, as opposed to some of the actual summer movie blockbusters.
What a fantastic book! I was enthralled by this story from beginning to end, it was so exciting, interesting, breathtaking, and nail-biting. I loved this new world that was created, loved the heroine we saw it all through, and the story which played out between these fascinating characters. Vlad was such an interesting character, incredibly dark and flawed, but also so alluring. I loved the moments with him and Leila. The secondary characters were fleshed out enough to add depth to this world and our two main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this and will definitely continue on with the next book. I wholeheartedly recommend to paranormal romance readers. As a side note, I listened to this one and the narrator did a fantastic job. I loved her take on this and I could barely stand to pause this for even a moment.
