Gruppenführer Kaltenbrunner isn't hiding the fact that he would love to get this beautiful girl as his mistress, but Annalise, despite the mutual attraction, stays faithful to her beloved husband. The Girl from Berlin: Standartenführer's Wife is an historical novel written by Ellie Midwood. When she was growing up, Annalise Meissner was not interested in going to school with the other children her age. She’d much rather practice her pirouettes and dance in the square, but somehow, Gryselda, the family’s housekeeper, knew her preferences and made sure she was safely back in school. Annalise was really much more comfortable with adults than children her own age, and she loved being with the grownups in her life. Her perfect world had some strange aspects to it, however, such as the talk her father had with her and her brother, Norbert, when she was nine years old. The Meissners were not really the Aryans she had always believed them to be, but rather they were originally from Poland and were Ashkenazi Jews. Her father’s grandparents had seen troubles coming and had changed the family’s name and converted to Protestantism to protect the family and their assets. Still, as Annalise was growing up in the comfort of the family’s upper middle class lifestyle, the treatment of the Jews in the increasingly intolerant conditions in Germany during the 1930s was troubling, especially considering her beloved family doctor, his son who would become her dance partner, and the other Jewish people she cared so much about were in deadly peril while her life continued unchanged.

Ellie Midwood’s historical novel, The Girl from Berlin: Standartenführer's Wife, is a fast-paced and utterly enthralling novel that chronicles the years leading up to World War II through the eyes of a young ballerina, Annalise Meissner. This novel is meticulously researched, and Annalise’s story is so compelling that I became totally engrossed in her life and experiences. Midwood is a master at blending fact and fiction in such a way that I was often tempted to revisit my history books to see which characters were historical personages and which were not. Her writing is seamless and inspired, and I soon forgot that an author was actually the creative force behind Annalise’s words. I was quite pleased to discover that Midwood plans a sequel to this story, Gruppenfuhrer’s Mistress. The Girl from Berlin: Standartenführer's Wife is highly recommended.

Dr. Tao Li is a professor and Graduate Program Director in the School of Computing and Information Sciences at Florida International University (FIU) and a professor in the School of Computer Science at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunication. He is on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and Knowledge and Information System Journal. He has received numerous honors, including an NSF CAREER Award, IBM Faculty Research Awards, an FIU Excellence in Research and Creativities Award, and IBM Scalable Data Analytics Innovation Award and Mentorship Awards. His research interests are in data mining, information retrieval, and computing system management. He received a PhD in computer science from the University of Rochester.

If *that* doesn't sell you on the book, I don't know what will...

I’ve been a DGB fan for a while now and this book certainly lives up to his standard. Packed with stories you won’t get in a “normal” NHL history and presented in a manner that makes it fun and easily digestible, Sean not only finds a way to break the literary neutral-zone trap, but also abolish the literary offside challenge while he’s at it. OK, maybe he didn’t do all that, but this book is great fun and you should buy it too. Oh, I also miss his Biscuits podcast. I just want that on the record.

I was so happy to find out that Down Goes Brown had written a book, and so happy to have purchased it and read it, It is a easy breeze through the history of the league, with laugh out loud stories all the way through. The book spends a lot of time covering the 90's - the modern era, which is great because so many NHL books were written during another era.

McIndoe does a very nice job of hitting the high points of NHL history and absurdity in 250 pages. This isn’t an exhaustive study of the league, nor is it meant to be. I consider myself a “business casual” fan of the league (it’s squarely my #4 of the big four leagues), but I definitely learned a few things and had a couple of good laughs and good memories remembering my heyday as a fan growing up in the 80s and 90s. Definitely recommended.

My first thought after finishing the book was that the author is head over heels in love with hockey. Fact and funny meet head on in a really interesting, informative and humorous chronological history of professional hockey in North America. Best sports book I've read since Ball Four

Phantom Blood's art shows its age, but it's the start to an amazing series. Absolutely buy this if you are a manga fan, as Jojo is the origin of many popular manga trends seen today. The quality of this printing is worth the extra few dollars over the Kindle edition, and the quality of the series is worth owning both Kindle and print if you are a collector.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is probably one of the greatest manga series to ever be created, but you probably already knew that. This is the first time Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency (parts one and two) have been released in the States, and boy was I excited. Of course some of the names were changed for copyright, like "Bruford" to "Bluford," but at least it's here. Also of note for this special edition is that there are some color pages! Of course I was expecting the whole thing to be full color pages like the official color scans, but in some pages there are only a few colors and not all of the pages are in color, which was disappointing but not unexpected.Of course this gets five stars, it's JoJo. If you haven't read the manga or watched the show (the fourth part should be out really soon) then you need to start. I know some people like to skip to part 3, Stardust Crusaders, since it's the most popular part, but you would be hurting yourself greatly by skipping the first two parts. Oh yeah and even though the anime for this part is basically Stardust Crusaders style of work, this is much more 80s, so it looks a little dated. I like the little interview at the end too, it gives a little insight to the author's creation of the characters.

These are the first few chapters of Hirohiko Araki's classic boy's comic (in Japanese "shōnen manga") Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Staking started with an idea for a villain & a setting - pure evil Dio & Victorian London. Most of this volume is concerned with finding a tone for the hero, Jonathan Joestar. The truly wacky stuff starts in later volumes.It's fitting that this adventure comic should start in Victorian England, as this was the historical origin of boy's adventure stories in general. Luckily, Araki wrote this before "steampunk" (SF adventure stories set in the Victorian era) became a movement, so he avoids its cliches.The art in this early chapter is sometimes crude, but always filled with energy. There's a clear parallel with the way Araki ignores realistic proportions & anatomy for maximum energy and Rob Liefeld's work in the 90's. The main difference being that Araki evolved while Liefeld stagnated...This story might be a little too violent for young children and a little too silly for disaffected teens. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in older "manga" and doesn't mind a little bit of blood and a lot of over the top acting.Two dogs die in this book. Be aware that this will keep happening.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is a very long-running manga; its 8th arc is currently being serialized in Japanese comic magazine "Ultra Jump".Although VIZ had released the 3rd arc in its entirety, the other arcs have not seen American shores...that was until now!Phantom Blood is the very start of the story. Even though it wasn't so much until the 3rd arc where the "stand" ability was developed and the story began to embrace its full craziness, Phantom Blood still manages to stand out.Araki draws very detailed images of muscular and flamboyant young men. Even if his art is a little rough, you will still find yourself spending plenty of time looking at it. There's just so much to look at! With more and more popular manga and anime titles embracing minimalist style, JOJO is a pleasant surprise.In addition to the art, Araki shows his eccentricity through his story. Romance, tragedy, violence, humor, friendship, morality, the supernatural... these are all themes he managed to incorporate into the story.As for the physical release, Viz has done a very nice job. A sturdy hardcover with new images from the artist, colored pages interspersed throughout, good quality paper with clear printing, and even a little bonus interview from Araki himself makes this a lovely addition to your JOJO collection or your manga shelf. I hope this level of quality continues throughout Phantom Blood and any subsequent releases of this unique series.I'm looking forward to the release of volumes 2 and 3!

I like this book. It's got a pretty good art style and is just wacky enough to be something different. Really wish they'd release the next books and be done with it though. I don't know if I'll care by the time that happens. I'll probably be reading something else at the time.PS: You can't go wrong with the book's physical quality. Love the hard cover that doesn't include a slip.

As an avid JJBA fan in the States, I highly suggest others, like myself, to buy this official English translated version of Phantom Blood so that we may continue to receive more official English translated volumes of Jojonium, aside from the planned releases of volumes 2 and 3. Shilling aside, the quality of the pages and art on the hardcover are impeccable! I know that most fans do not like Araki's new style, but I welcome it as I grew to love it throughout Steel Ball Run, and currently Jojolion.

This is what a expected, some of the art is a but werid but Hirohiko was just starting this out and did not find a solid art style. if you wonder how farthis book goes in phantom blood it goes as far as when Dio put on the stone mask for thoose who watched the anime and have not read the manga.

Fantastic series. This is a must buy for people who are already familiar with the series as well as newcomers. It packs around 250 pages per volume, which is a decent bang for your buck, especially for a hardcover series. The extra art and snippets from the author are also a welcome bonus.The art itself looks great with some color pages thrown in and the translation is top notch. As for the story itself, it's Jojo, just read it already!

About the Author
Donald J. Boudreaux served as chairman of the department of economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, from 2001 to 2009. He runs a blog, CafeHayek.com, with Russ Roberts and has lectured in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. He is the author of Globalization (2008), and his writing has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Regulation, Reason, Ideas on Liberty, the Washington Times, the Journal of Commerce, the Cato Journal, and several scholarly journals.

Before chairing the economics department at George Mason, Boudreaux was president of the Foundation for Economic Education; associate professor of legal studies and Economics at Clemson University, and assistant professor of economics at George Mason University.
